Surf film to launch festival
The CinefestOZ 2021 film festival will host the world premiere of Western Australian documentary Facing Monsters, Tuesday August 24 at Margaret River HEART.
Directed by Bentley Dean (Contact, Tanna), from producer Chris Veerhuis ((Red Dog: True Blue, Breath) and executive producer Susanne Morrison, the documentary follows enigmatic free surfer Kerby Brown as he takes on some of the world’s deadliest slab waves, attempting to reconcile his personal demons and fulfil a childhood dream.
The suspenseful, action-packed drama unravels Kerby’s inner demons whilst confronting the real-world consequences that his death-defying passion could have on his family, featuring incredible cinematography from Rick Rifici (Breath, Blueback).
In addition to its world premiere, Facing Monsters will have an ‘In Conversation’ lunch event with film makers and talent at Margaret River-based restaurant Burger Baby from 11:30am on Wednesday August 25.
This informal dining experience will give festival visitors the chance to indulge in a progressive lunch and is the perfect way to combine the region’s best views, food and ales on tap with inspiring behind-the-scenes stories of how this documentary came to be.
CinefestOZ CEO Malina Nixon said the films in this year’s program were an important opportunity to highlight the work of Australian filmmakers, showcasing WA creatives who are premiering their work to the world for the first time.
“We’re incredibly proud of the diversity and inclusion that out film program continues to deliver, especially when it comes to projects that have been created, produced and filmed here in WA,” she said.
“CinefestOZ champions Australian-made films and we are always excited to shine a spotlight on local filmmakers each year.”
Tickets to Margaret River’s Opening Night screening of Facing Monsters can be bought online. Tickets to the In Conversation lunch are also available.
