Local artists open their hearts

Local artists prepare for the South-West Shorts 2020 event on August 1, which will be the first theatrical performance held at the Margaret River HEART since re-opening.

Now in its fourth year, the collaborative event created by Edge Performance Writers Collective, gives Western Australian writers the opportunity to have their work developed and produced.

Producer Therese Edmonds said it’s wonderful to see our own WA writers, performers and crew able to get together again and create such a fabulous event in a year when the theatre has been hit so hardly by COVID-19.

“We have so much talent here, so many great stories to tell about life in our own home state”, Ms Edmonds said.

“I love seeing this performance unfold, it’s always a very special event.”

The 2020 event has connected theatre artists from the regional and metropolitan areas, bringing together eight different teams from Margaret River, Busselton, Esperance, Manjimup, Molloy Island and Perth to create this unique event.

Six original short plays and one performance poetry piece by special guest Sari Bennett will be performed on the evening.

Three South-West Shorts 2020 competition finalists reign from the South-West region and three from Perth.

South-West Shorts 2020 finalist Carolyn Forte said she is thrilled to be chosen as a finalist and to be rehearsing her play ‘Home’ with local Margaret River theatre artist Amy Johnstone.

“As a writer it is an honour to receive this endorsement and I’m loving this opportunity to direct such a talented and passionate actor as Amy”, Ms Forte said.

“She is able to bring the perfect balance of strength and vulnerability to the part.”

Ms Johnstone said she has wanted to work with Carolyn for such a long time and this time the stars have aligned in a wonderful way.

“She brings so much experience and passion to every rehearsal and we feed positive energy to and from each other”, she said.

Unique handmade trophies created and donated by the Melting Pot Glass Studio will be provided to the South-West Shorts 2020 award winners.
