If you’re a David Bowie fan, or even if you’re not . . .
Rebel is a high-energy and thoroughly enjoyable hour of music and entertainment. Billed as a tribute to David Bowie, the performers do an excellent job of not only bringing Bowie’s music to life but also bringing the theatre and spectacle that he was renowned for.
The talented Stewart Reeve led the band with a powerful voice that was eerily reminiscent of Bowie’s and more than capable of paying tribute to the much missed superstar. Stewart looked the part as well – strutting and gyrating around the stage in platform boots and an outfit worthy of Ziggy Stardust.
Choosing from such an immense repository of music required months of deliberation (so Stewart told us) and the selection didn’t disappoint with classics such as Space Oddity, Ziggy Stardust, Let’s Dance, Heroes, Cat People (Putting Out Fire), Under Pressure and of course Rebel Rebel. A unique acoustic arrangement of Loving The Alien was a rare treat. As a long time Bowie fan I had goose bumps on occasion.
Many of the songs were accompanied by acrobatic acts which served as a beautiful visual accent to the music. We were treated with aerial silks, hula-hoops, roller skates and trapeze, and the talented guitarist Chris Springer surprised us by revealing that he is also an acrobat himself, working the Chinese pole with grace and strength.
The keyboard player turned out to be accomplished on the cyr wheel and fire eating, and drummer Rachel Trainor took a spell on acoustic guitar and accompanied Stewart on vocals as well. Guitarist Cat Scobie wowed the audience with her talents and during one song gyrated around the stage adorned with metal plates, an angle grinder used (carefully!) to create showers of sparks! All in all a very enjoyable show that ended way too soon! Encore!

It can sometimes be hard to adapt to the loss of a well known celebrity, but through tribute shows, it can become slightly easier to mourn the loss and ensure that their legacy lives on. Such is the case with Highwire Entertainment’s Adelaide premiere tribute show, Rebel, an intricately crafted show which honours and pays tribute to the late David Bowie, through the medium of circus and a live soundtrack. It is a show which ensures that he is respectfully remembered and one which ensures that his legacy lives on. One performer in the show begins with a quote that Bowie himself once said, “I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring”. Highwire Entertainment can be certain that this quote is true for Rebel; the show definitely is not boring. It’s a fun and exciting show suitable for all ages.
Rebel features a live soundtrack of well selected Bowie songs which are occasionally complemented by circus acts such as the cyr wheel, Chinese pole, fire eating and spinning, hula hoops, aerial acts, roller skating stunts and an interesting act featuring an angle grinder, making this a unique tribute show, and one which would make Bowie proud.
Each circus performer doubles as a musician and performer, and each is entertaining to watch. They demonstrate excellence in both their circus act and musicianship, and many of the circus stunts leave audience members gasping in awe. This band of circus performers is lead by charismatic performer and singer Stewart Reeve, who looks and sounds just like Bowie himself, and one who would make Bowie proud. Furthermore, of particular interest, is the bright coloured and sparkling Bowie inspired costuming and make up featured in the show, which complements the show well.
Today, there are several tribute shows paying respect to many artists, and some shows are good, some are bad, and some are otherwise. Rebel is the earlier, and more. It is one show which ensures that the life, vibrancy and legacy of Bowie lives on for many years to come, and this show should be an inspiration for those wishing to produce a Bowie tribute show in the future. It could even be one which converts a person to become a Bowie fan, if they are not already. It is, quite simply, a visual and aural feast.
